The Fairtrade mark is an independent consumer label, which appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.
All involved in Fairtrade accept that it has to include:
- paying fair prices to producers which reflect the true cost of production
- supporting producer organisations in their social and environmental projects
- promoting gender equality in pay and working conditions
- advising on product development to increase access to markets
- committing to long term relationships to provide stability and security
- campaigning to highlight the unequal system of world trade which places profit above human rights and threatens our environment.
Two thirds of the world’s cotton is produced I developing countries, but the price that farmers in these countries receive for their high quality cotton is driven down by Northern subsidies and competition from synthetic fibres.
The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent body that awards the Fairtrade Mark to products that meet the Fairtrade Standards.
Bringing cotton producer groups into the Fairtrade system helps small-scale cotton farmers tackle poverty, therefore improving the conditions in which they live and work
Below are some of the environmental and social benefits to the cotton farmers:
Increased Income
Fairtrade guarantees the farmers a better price for their cotton, meaning they are able to support their families and invest in their farms. Their housing conditions can be improved and children can go to school.
Community Development
The Fairtrade price also includes a premium to be set aside for investing in social and environmental projects, ensuring that communities have the ability to fund long-term improvement.
Responsible farming
Fairtrade cotton farmers are committed to reducing chemical use, replacing conventional pesticides and fertilizers with natural alternatives, to help protect themselves and the environment.
Non GM
Fairtrade standards prohibit the use of genetically modified cotton seed.
By purchasing products made with Fairtrade certified cotton, you can help reverse injustices that cotton farmers face.
“I did not have any education myself, so I am willing to help my children to get the best possible schooling. I can support them like this because of the Fairtrade price”. Laljibhai Narranbhai, Cotton Farmer, India
